Turning a Mystery Message Into a Vocabulary Exploration
Every LitART Literacy Hour features a Mystery Message, a word or phrase taken from the day's picture book or novel that students use to develop their phonic skills and phonemic awareness. One way this happens is through "Words in Words."
1. Imagine that the day's Mystery Message is "caterpillar."
2. Divide the white board into columns.
3. At the top of each column write "two letter words," "three letter words," all the way up to six (or just a little past your students' current abilities).
4. Divide the class into groups.
5. Invite the groups to come up with one word for each column (cat, pillar, etc.).
6. Go around the class and get the words for each column.
As an extension, encourage the students to use the words for their Journal Response!
