Running Questions: One Fun Way to Ask Questions
Make comprehension questions fun and active by using Running Questions.
Are you ready to move beyond asking a question, asking students to raise their hand, choosing a student, listening, saying right or wrong, asking another question, etc.?
Ten Steps to Running Questions
- Create two lines of 4-5 students. (Other students observe.)
- Stand about 10 yards away.
- Invite the first student in each line to run and touch your hand when you say, “go”.
- Lead the two students back to the front of the line.
- Ask the question to the student who touched your hand first.
- Ask the other student if they agree or disagree with the response.
- If they agree, ask the whole group if they agree. (If they disagree, ask the student to answer the question and then ask the original respondent if they agree. If they cannot agree, hand the pair the book and ask them to go find the answer.)
- Use a LitART Celebration
- Send the pair to the end of the line. Repeat for the rest of the line.
- After everyone has gone, switch out the whole group of students.
The key to success is to move quickly and keep up the energy. A group of 20 students should take 10 minutes at most. Try it and let me know how it goes.
