Reasons to Use Picture Books in Your After School Program

Picture Books in after school are a knock out.  We could go on all day about the pluses to picture books in developing the reading skills, fluency, and overall literacy of students. Here are just some of the reasons we use, and encourage the use of, picture books in literacy programs.

1. Students think they're interesting and engaging.

2. They help develop story sense.

3. They can be completed in one session.

4. They expose students to different authors, styles, vocabulary, and text structures.

5. Pictures offer context to English learners and struggling readers.
