Name Five
How to Introduce the Daily Word Collection
Name Five is an activity played during Opening Magic, the first LitART component of the day. It's used as a transition from the regular school day to the after school program, and focuses on thinking skills, movement, and strategy. You can use it strictly as a vocabulary warm-up, or take it to the next level by encouraging students to use vocabulary from the word collection—which is always written up on the board along with the rest of the daily plan—to get them thinking about the language they'll be encountering during the day's literacy hour.
1. Divide the class into two groups.
2. Say, "Please think of five things you could find in a supermarket." For older students you can say, "Please think of five things you can find in a supermarket that start with the letter r."
3. Have students raise their hands.
4. Ping Pong back and forth between the two groups. Only call on someone if they have their hand is up. If no one from the group has their hand up say, "bzzzz" like you're an angry buzzer and skip to the other group.
5. Keep going until the energy starts to flag—don't stop at five! The idea is to explore language, not reach a limit.
When you're finished check off the vocabulary from the word collection that was used in the game, and then move on to the Daily Tone!
