Using Commercials to Sell a Story

Whole Book Strategies are among the many LitART Literacy Responses that follow a picture book or novel.  They involve returning to the text and usually require the class to be divided into pairs or small groups. In Book Commercials students work in pairs to create a 30 second commercial for a book.

Here's how it works:

1. Preview/review the book.

2. Write a 30 second commercial that includes:

  • The publication date of the book.
  • Awards/special qualities.
  • The cost.
  • The Tagline.

3. Rehearse actions/events/words/timing.

4. Use the Three Stars Sharing Strategy (each group presents their commercial, and then the class asks 3 questions about it).
