Hamlet 2

Alternate Endings Lead to New Story Possibilities

What if Hamlet didn't die at the end of the play, or if Romeo and Juliet lived happily ever after? Alternate endings reveal what made the original story work so well (Romeo & Juliet turns out to be rather anti-climatic once they move to the suburbs) and also help students use their imaginations to create their own exciting stories.

1. Review the end of the story.

2. Brainstorm a list of alternate endings.

3. Choose a new story.

4. Invite the students to write a new story beginning with the new ending.

5. Try reading the stories with the new endings.
