Every Little Bit Counts
Using Informal Language to strengthen oral communication skills.
For many classroom leaders components such as snack time and recreation are moments to collect their thoughts, relax, and prepare for the enrichment and academic support segments of their after school program. Unfortunately by doing so they're missing a prime opportunity to expand their students' oral language skills.
Informal language is any kind of discussion that falls outside of regular instruction. For example, while students eat during snack time the classroom leader might say, "nice Lilo & Stitch T-shirt: have you been to Disneyland?" From there a lively discussion can be facilitated where students offer up their favorite rides, foods, and anything else that is unique to the amusement park. One last bit of advice: it helps to end conversation starters with questions to prompt student responses. Give it a shot and see what happens!
