Dear Mr. McDermott
Letters Make Reading a Two-Way Street
When you think about it, reading is like telepathy; you're experiencing another person's thoughts, climbing into their head to see how they perceive the world. Usually this is a passive experience, a one-way street between authors and their audience. Writing a letter is a means of creating a dialogue that enlivens both readers and writers.
1. Invite students to identify a favorite author. Students can choose from a set of books or choose an author of their own.
2. Provide an example of a letter format.
3. Encourage students to include a question and a favorite book in the letter.
4. Find the author's address on the Internet.
5. Send the letter.
