A Ball By Any Other Name

Changing Shapes Gives Your Class Flexibility

A big challenge for after school programs is motivating their students. Many are on the ropes academically and socially, and aren't in the best of moods when it comes to sitting down for reading time. Pantomime activities is a good way to shake them out of this rut, and engage them so that they're ready to jump into their literacy hour.

1. Invite students to sit in a circle.

2. Create a shape through pantomime.

3. After about 10 seconds, pass the shape.

4. The next student takes the shape and, after a couple of seconds, changes it into another shape.

5. Pass the shape all the way around the circle.

6. Each student may change the shape before they pass it on to the next student.

7. Encourage students to change the weight and size of the shape.

8. When it gets back to the leader, take the shape, shrink it down, and put it in your pocket for next time.
