LitART CLASS for Middle/High School
The CLASS Curriculum was designed for Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Grant programs.
The curriculum combines engaging student projects with brief skill lessons to ensure students master the essential information literacy skills of the future.
Library Skills
Library science involves students being able to access, evaluate, and use information in a library setting.
This curriculum provides students opportunities to explore both the text and electronic resources found in the library. Includes 40 essential library skill lessons including using reference materials, the Dewey Decimal system, parts of a book, and literary concepts.
Research Skills
Research skills involve students being able to access, evaluate, analyze, verify, and use information in a variety of forms.
Students use books, the internet, and periodicals as sources. Includes 40 mini-lessons that teach the entire research process including choosing topics, developing research questions, and writing reports.
Media Literacy Skills
Media Literacy is understanding of media’s role in society and the techniques used by the media.
This curriculum teaches students to be informed "consumers" of messages in the media and features 40 mini lessons that teach key information literacy skills using the newspaper, magazines, advertisements, television, and the Internet.
Technology Skills
The learning technology curriculum involves students being able to use technology as a tool for productivity, communications, research, problem solving, as well as understanding the social and ethical use of technology.
This component features 40 mini-lessons as part of the Travel Project to teach the basics of PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and the Internet in the context of planning a trip.
