Lindsay Unified wins library grant.
Lindsay Unified and Global Learning were recently awarded an Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Grant.
The goal of the CLASS Project is to improve student literacy skills. To accomplish this, LUSD will create five CLASS Project Library Centers to serve as the focal point for literacy development and reading support at the five participating schools. These centers will provide access to the materials, resources, infrastructure, professional development, and ongoing support needed to improve the literacy skills of the 3,830 students served in grades K-12.
The CLASS Project objectives are a direct reflection of the statute, current research into the role of the school library for improving literacy skills, and the school media center library plan recently completed by the LUSD. They include:
- Print resources. Add over 4,200 new books, 100 periodicals, and other essential print resources such as newspapers to the libraries.
- Technology. Ensure each school library has a fully networked computer lab, computer projectors, digital video cameras, state of the art software, and other advanced technology to support literacy development.
- Professional development. Deliver 80 hours of training and other professional support to all library staff and selected teachers in media literacy, research skills, library science, learning technology, and literacy skills.
- Library access. Ensure access to all school libraries for at least 120 minutes after school, 30 minutes before school, and four weeks during the summer. In addition, keep one library open until 8:00 p.m. every weekday evening.
- Collaboration and planning. Facilitate quarterly trainings and monthly meetings to increase collaboration between library staff and teachers.
- Monitoring and evaluation. Use the Acquisition to Integration to Outcomes evaluation model to maintain the focus on enhanced teaching and learning to increase student literacy skills.
